The visual artist and musician Rainier Lericolais (b. 1970 in Châteauroux) lives and works in Paris. His multi-facetted practice concentrates on the connections between visual arts and music, often taking the shape of elegant and precarious graphic works. Taking his cue from music, Lericolais uses sampling as a means to mix and remix shapes and images according to his influences and encounters. He also draws inspiration from an encyclopaedic musical (counter-)culture and a both curious and eclectic approach to literature, art and cinema. Lericolais is developing a rigorous yet experimental oeuvre that interweaves various mediums and in which chance plays a decisive role. His work can be found in the collections of numerous Regional Contemporary Art Funds (Frac) and other public institutions such as the Musée national d’art contemporain – Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), the collection of the Centre national des arts plastiques (Paris-La Défense) or MAC VAL (Vitry-sur-Seine). Several personal exhibitions have been devoted to his work, including Plunder (URDLA, Centre International Estampe & Livre, Villeurbanne, 2018), Rainier Lericolais (Galerie Nosbaum Reding, Luxembourg, 2018), Cut Up (La Mauvaise Réputation, Bordeaux, 2019) and Volume 4 (Frac Limousin, Limoges, 2012). His discography includes more than 100 references; among others, he is the author of D.P.I. (Atelier de création radiophonique, France Culture, 2015) and, more recently, Ray (Musée du Luxembourg, Paris, 2020). He has collaborated with musicians as diverse as Simon Fisher Turner, Stephan Eicher, Minizza, Klara Lewis or Sylvain Chauveau.
